The Cock has been a cornerstone of Hitchin’s social scene for nearly 500 years.

Over the centuries, it has evolved through numerous cosmetic and structural changes, reflecting shifts in ownership, management, and purpose. From cockfighting pit to coaching house, from inn to hotel, The Cock has consistently remained an important gathering place for the people of Hitchin.

Today, this beautifully restored and refurbished Grade II listed building has returned to its roots as a pub and restaurant. Honouring its long and distinguished past, The Cock now stands confidently as a contemporary destination for those who appreciate thoughtful, ingredient-led dining. Led by Head Chef Alex, they craft exceptional dishes designed to delight food lovers throughout Hitchin and the wider Hertfordshire area.

Snack on Confit duck tartlets, with blackberry, & gingerbread. Start with Cured chalk stream trout, with fennel, apple, and lovage. For Mains, indulge in Roasted pork loin, parsnip, apple, salsify, and cider sauce. Add a side of Caramelised savoy cabbage or Triple cooked chips. Finish off with a delicious Apple parfait, almond sponge, and tipsy’ blackberries.

Enjoy an extensive wine list, with quality vintages and high critics scores for that special occasion - including a 2022 Corton Charlemagne, Grand Cru, Génot Boulanger and a 2009 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Grand Cru Classe, Pessac Leognan. The wine cellar is something to behold, one of the best in the local area.
